Series

series

My tendency is to work in series. Since 1963 I have created over eighty, what I call series, of certain related subject matter, like my current "Vessel Series". These could result in only a small number of paintings done in months, to hundreds of paintings done over years. What is shown here is only a small sampling representing only a few extended series. I explore a subject until I feel it is more or less resolved, to the extent where I become too familiar with it, and the challenge begins to wear thin. I do not choose to move on to the next subject, rather it chooses me when the urge becomes strong enough.

The subject is usually a central motif in iconic form. Words come to mind; universal, monumental, emblematic, and often symbolic or metaphoric, as opposed to an "all over" composition. Occasionally, however, I will defy my own tendencies...
